Rituals of Time, Senegal

Developed in collaboration with Neue-Forma for the Kaira Looro Architecture Competition, this proposal reimagines the community centre as a place shaped by ritual, climate, and collective life. Conceived for a rural community in Senegal, the project draws on local building traditions, passive environmental strategies, and the social significance of gathering.

Organised around a central water courtyard that marks the passage of time, the architecture creates a sequence of spaces for learning, performance, celebration, and everyday community life. Earth construction, timber, and a lightweight thatched roof combine with rainwater harvesting and passive cooling strategies to create a resilient, low impact building rooted in its landscape. Rather than imposing a singular architectural object, the proposal seeks to create a framework that can evolve with its community while celebrating the relationship between people, place, and making.
